Central laboratory is located in a beautiful renovated building at Faculty of Science (Moharam Bey Campus) with a staff of a full time nine employees plus four others on the supporting NMR unit.

Mission

Central Laboratory is dedicated to providing quality laboratory information with appropriate and approved methods.

Vision

Our vision is to be recognized both within the universities and throughout the professional and public community as a successful, productive, and talented scientific establishment capable of providing high quality, legally defensible, and timely environmental laboratory data and related services.

Ethics

Lab Services pledges to manage its business according to the following principles:

  • To produce results that are accurate and defensible.
  • To present services in a confidential, honest and forthright manner.
  • To provide staff members with guidelines and an understanding of the ethical and quality standards required to work in the laboratory.
  • To have a clear understanding with the client as to the extent and the kind of service to be rendered, especially in fields where different grades or characters of services are offered.
  • To oppose and refrain from incompetent and fraudulent inspection, sampling, analysis, testing, consultation, development and research work.

Capabilities/Services

Laboratory Services is a full service analytical testing and consulting group within the AU. We primarily serve client groups primarily within the Operations Division. The analytical services that Laboratory Services provides include wet chemistry, metals, organics, and microbiology testing.  Related services include field sampling, and technical consultation.

Central Laboratory Services uses state of the art automated instrumentation to provide

  • Technologically advanced - we have access to the very latest technologies and techniques, giving our clients high throughput, incredibly accurate, rapid turnaround results.
  • Access to specialists - we have in-house expertise in the fields of chemistry, microbiology, and environmental sciences.

Thermogravimetric Analyzer:  LINSEIS STA PT1000 (TG – DTA/DSC)

The Linseis STA PT1000 is a top loading Thermobalance, which offers a highly user-friendly design. Even at a sample weight of up to10g the Tara is done electronically. The specially designed furnaces allow fast heating and cooling rates as well as a highly precise temperature control. The system can be optionally equipped with a coupling device for EGA (Evolved Gas Analysis). The instrument is highly suitable for thermal composition, thermal stability and oxidation studies.  It measures the weight loss or weight gain of a sample as it is subjected to a controlled temperature environment (TG).

Gas Chromatograph/Mass Spectrometer: Clarus 600/560 D

The Clarus® 560 D GC/MS combines the dependable diffusion-pump capabilities of the high-performance Clarus 600 D MS with the robust Clarus 500 GC, enabling the laboratory to conduct reliable, cost-effective routine analyses for volatile organic mixtures. It offers state-of-the-art electronics for the fastest scanning rates and widest mass range, coupled with the most robust, flexible GC autosampler, an intuitive touch-screen interface and two extra GC channels for additional application work, while maintaining  a compact footprint for minimal bench space. Thus, it is a sophisticated benchtop mass spectrometric detector that provides researcher with the simple tool needed to perform routine gas chromatography/mass spectrometry analyses such:

-Measuring environmental volatile organic compounds

-Analysis of fuel oxygenates

-Determination of residual solvents in pharmaceutical materials

-Identify volatile contaminants in mineral oil

-Drug screening

- Analysis of pesticides in foodstuffs and herbicides in water

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectrometer: JEOL JNM-ECA 500  MHz

NMR instrument capable of handling a wide range of nuclei (e.g. 1H, 13C, 31P, 19F….etc) and techniques in both solution (e.g. 1D, nD  COSY, NOESY, ROESY, HMBC, HMQC…etc) and solid states.  It consists of two broadband transmitters with one high frequency and one low frequency amplifier. A variable temperature controller allows experiments to be run at both high and low temperatures will also be available.  The JEOL 500 is a state-of-the-art spectrometer, equipped with indirect detection capability and a Z-gradient which provides excellent solvent suppression and faster, higher quality 2D spectra using gradient selected experiments.

The Central Lab also has the following instruments:

Elemental Analyzer: Perkin Elmer PE 2400 Series II CHNS/O Analyzer

Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer: PE 2380

Flame Photometer 410 corning

UV/Vis Spectrophotometers: P.E Lambada 4B and Unicam SP 1750

Conductivity Meter (CM35)

pH – meter (pH25)

HACH-DR/2000
